Our Growing Practices

At Williamson Orchards we strive to provide the highest quality and best-flavored produce while acting as good stewards of the land. As a grower we must find the perfect balance between what our customers want and what is good for the earth. For this reason we heavily research every new variety of fruit. Through this process we have been able to introduce the Criterion and Honeycrisp apple and the Pluot, a cross between apricot and plum, to the Treasure Valley.

Our goal is to grow the highest quality crop while using the least amount of chemicals possible. If orchards conditions such as undesirable weather causes high populations of crop damaging pests, our procedures are to use the least intrusive and nearest to organic methods. We are also willing to try new products and procedures. For instance, we were one of the first orchards in Idaho to use insect pheromone mating disruption in our peaches and apples. Currently we are using a new system for the Cherry Fruit Fly, which is an organic attract and bait system.

The Treasure Valley of Idaho is high dessert climate. With population’s growth in the area and long-term drought, water conservation and quality have become very important. We have moved from rill irrigation to sprinkler to micro sprinkler to drip irrigations. Each of the irrigation advancements has decreased the amount of water and electricity required.
